exhibit: mythic chaos: 50 years of destroy all monsters

my old printmaking professor showed me a few prints from this show, which really intrigued me -- they were fake flyers for different lectures at my alma mater. i really wanted to get out there, but cranbrook is kind of a trek from where i live. >_< i saw this show with my bestie and my sister!
mike kelley, a founding member of destroy all monsters is a very specific and important artist to me. when i was in high school, i was apart of a literary arts youth organization in detroit, and we often did workshops in "mobile homestead" a full scale representation of his childhood home in westland, michigan. i am from southeast michigan, so of course, this 1950s ranch house makes me very emotional, and brings back memories of places ive been in. heck, my childhood home is a 1980s ranch, lol. seeing his earlier collaborations made me similarly emotional! i think i just have a lot of emotions.
if you even have an inkling of knowledge in punk history, destroy all monsters must certainly have come up for you! they group formed in 1973 by art students at the university of michigan and were active in the ann arbor area from 1973-1976. not only do i love looking at some hyper local history, but i love the ethos and sound of their work - gritty and gross, bright all at once, unafraid to be ugly. on another note, the music is just one aspect of their work - it allowed me to think of how my art can live and breathe in different mediums, and how artmaking can be a collaborative process.
really cool stuff. im glad i went. i loved all the screen and gelatin prints, in particular.

i read part of this book years ago for a introduction to creative writing class in college. we read the last part -- the book is seperated into three sections? short stories? idk how to describe it.
han kang has such a great facility to give voice to truly despicable characters. enrapturing. i read it over the course of a morning!

read for our global feminisms book club, i enjoyed this read (well, i listened to the audiobook) - this book made me so emotional - despite the narrator being quite aloof, her journey in learning to become human in a land of desolation left me asking questions made me :-( sad! but hopeful
